MACHU PICCHU!! DAY 4

It was an early day ... but not too early .... turns out that going to Peru in the 'rainy' season is brilliant because everyone is scared away!  So, we had a breakfast pretty much to ourselves until it was time to head out to the bus.  Our organizer was able to snag the early entry to climb the mountain this morning when it looked like it had sold out ... so that was exciting!  We were on the 7am bus ....
Hardest part of this trip was figuring out how to layer ... being the rainy season, it is normally pretty warm BUT there are moments of downpour, and you never know when which one is coming!
I am so glad I took a 'ride up the mountain' picture because you will enjoy the 'ride down the mountain' picture even more at the end of the day ... the ride up was scary ... lots of switchbacks, lots of drop-off into an unknown cliff, etc ... but the ride down?  Add a seat at the back of the bus and the ability to see every single hairpin turn on the rainy, muddy roads .... scariest of my life ... but I digress ... first - Machu Picchu!!
Fresh and Happy!  At the beginning of our day!  Ponchos on!!
Checkbox #2, see the llamas who live there (or are they alpacas...it was a big mystery to us)
We picked up a lovely Brazilian student who was hiking both mountains today - so she was solo on this mountain ... we were happy to add her to our party!
Made it to the top!!!!  Lots of scrambling, on all 4's, stepping lightly ... straight up in many parts!
And can you see the VIEW we were rewarded with?  (insert sarcasm) ... but I didn't care too much ... sure, but of a bummer that we were fogged in, but we were warned about that ... I cared mostly that we just made it to the highest peak!!!
 Best ever travel buddy ....
And now ... the descent!!  Please note the teeny, tiny stairs for teeny, tiny Inca feet .... and wow, straight down .. don't trip or get vertigo!
Still enjoying the view, the foggy view ..
And my goodness.... be fearful of this trek if you have a few extra pounds on you!  I am ginormous in Peruvian standards, but thankfully more tall than wide ... this was a descent into a very tight cave where you had to lean against the wall and shimmy through to get out the other side!!  No warnings here, and because it is a loop going down, you have no warning of this obstacle on the way up!
These picture do no justice to the depth and height of how far you would fall if you tripped ... this was a beautiful walkway that was so "Avatar-like" ... so gorgeous ... no justice done by the pictures.
Three strong, sweaty women .... task complete!!!
Now for the walk back through the ruins in order to check BACK in .... it is a strange system ... but you kind of get to see the ruins 3 times ... once on the way to the mountain, twice on the down from the mountain and back to the entrance ... and then your final visit.
 These hallways!!
Ok, NOW I can enjoy the view!
 The stamping of the passport!!
And now back to the throngs of tourists who are eager to get into the ruins, and just take their selfies ....
My hearts came along with me ....
As did my plastic wrap poncho ....
Classic pensive look out the Inca window ....
See that mountain behind us??  WE CLIMBED TO THE TOP!!!

Hello Inca Bridge ... I had been dreaming about you for a year since I stumbled upon reading about it a year ago, one night at 2am when I do most of my travel research!!
It was spectacular and terrifying!!  The drop was so far, and the mountains to the far right were high enough to almost induce vertigo!!
Again ... pics don't do it justice!!
Ran into the ladies from the night before who told us they were turned back from doing the big mountain hike ... unsure how they all weren't captured in the selfie but their husbands were??
Here she goes .... poncho flying in the wind ...

Highlight of the day this Inca Bridge ...
Also a highlight of the day was doing the day with this gal ....
 WAS HERE!
 Marilyn Poncho Monroe
Just hanging around at some ruins ...
 Great day ...
That turned into a terrifying day ... bus ride home that I kept my eyes closed for the majority of it ... as the bus slides into the hairpin turns all the way down the mountain.... SO scary.
Thank you google - here is some perspective for you - now picture these roads wet and muddy.  Now picture your eyes cinched closed and breath held for the entire ride ....
Once back at our B&B, thankful that we survived the day,  we negotiated a 4 hour room rate (like a couple of 'working' women lol)... and enjoyed a hot shower and a nap ... but we were both still SO chilled from our day that we were pretty excited about our hats!!   Thank you Chris!!
It was time for the train to Ollyantambo!!  Here was the view from the waiting room.
Pretty different experience on the way down ... they 'include' a fashion show led by this weirdo masked woman who pulls all the men up to dance.  We were pretty happy to be women at this point.
The little town we were to explore over the next 36 hours have mainly cobblestone streets and very narrow alleys, so not a ton of cars ... so this tuk tuk was our ride to the main square where our host met us, and again walked us back to the B&B since the alley is too narrow for any cars!
Shannon gave me the big bed under the window tonight!!
The window opened to this adorable alleyway with the sound of rushing river ... very calming!

Travel day to the base of Machu Picchu! - DAY 3

After a very scary ride up to Olleyantambo from Cusco...we checked in with our train and had a little time to kill ... so we grabbed a sandwich and a coke...
And made a new friend ....
Very beautiful spot ... I took a selfie and sent it to Chris ....
When it was time to load the train, we walked past a looooong lineup of people who were at train C but we were train D .... and at our train car, there were staff waiting to help us up the steps into our very own car!!!!
All alone ... enjoying the small upgrade (it was only about $25 extra for the train car with the windows in the ceiling ... Vista Dome ... VERY worth it given the magnificent heights of these mountains!

 Best train ride ever ....

Inca trail ... people walk it ... we train it ...
Our lovely B&B host ... waiting for us at the train and luckily we were within walking distance, so we just followed him back like little ducklings ...
Nicest little room and here we are discovering what we thought was a closet, was a bathroom!!!!
After a little rest, we headed out to explore "Aguas Calientes"... or 'Machu Picchu Town'....this river was terrifying ... here we are sitting on the rooftop of a local restaurant ... the terrace felt like it was built over the river and can you see the speed of the river?  Terrifying ...

Kids are so happy here ... it was one of the highlights - moms or grandmas are always nearby, everyone is clean and well fed .... family is paramount ...
 Beautiful little town ...
Bridge with the locks on it!   While we were exploring, we ran into some women who had been to Machu Picchu today and their guide told them not to hike the mountain we were planning on hiking tomorrow ... too slippery, too steep, too risky ... so we both felt a little unnerved about that.
This river though .... so powerful, it was easy to imagine it taking over if it got out of control ....
We got suckered into going into a restaurant by a quick talking front man who promised us a free pisco sour ... we were pretty tired and sick of being accosted by all the front men.....here its the pisco sour ... it was good ... until we learned the froth on top is egg white (bleh) ... but it was yummy
Yes .. that is a second one .... good dinner ... my risk-taking travel companion (not), wanted Pizza .. so we had wood fired pizza and pisco sours ....

Cusco DAY 2

First day at the super high elevation and it was my turn to feel it .... I am smiling in the picture below, but we had climbed the 10 steps up to the Cathedral and I was feeling it.  Headache, a little nauseous, tired .... but we were there to explore!!!
From behind us we hear "Hello my friends!!" ... Victor, our artist friend from yesturday arrived to show us his town and we started with the very famous Inca wall!  This is the stone with 12 corners ... and each stone is so tight up against it!  Can you see the smaller rocks on the bottom?  It was built that way to withstand earthquakes ... the lower rocks would absorb the shakes and keep the upper rocks in place....
He was such a nice guy ... easy to be with, and so forthcoming with all the Peruvian-type questions that we had!
He was very proud of the fact that Peru grows over 3000 types of potatoes!!  He took us to the local market and it was unreal ... so much fresh food!
His friend ran this fruit drink stand ... when you walk in, all these ladies are leaning out over their fruit trying to get your attention!  Come to MY drink stand!!  But he lead us straight here and it took awhile because she peeled so many fruits for the best drink ... we even talked Shannon into drinking (she was very gun shy to try any food on this trip ... nobody wants to get sick! But we had traveler probiotics with every breakfast!)

We picked up his artist folder on the way back to the square because after he left us, he went back to hustling ... very nice guy ... he left us at the chocolate museum ...
But he first showed us roasted guinea pig that we could have bought from this gal!  Teeth and all!
We found this little alcove, hidden from the main streets, and we each purchased some llama socks!
Quick nap and then back down to the lobby to finish buying our machu picchu tickets ....
Maritza, very lovely woman ... weak English which lead to a few miscommunications ... but very sweet.  She got us all ready for our big trip!!  She put all our tickets in 'dummy order' - bus ticket, then train ticket, then machu picchu ticket, then bus ticket, then train ticket ... lol .. very dummy proof.

Arriving in Cusco!!

Flew to Cusco and checked into our swanky hotel!  Promptly crawled into bed for a rest ....

Later that afternoon we headed out to explore the main square ....
We were winded but happy to be there ... such a beautiful city ....
My first goal was a picture with a baby Llama ....
It was the softest and cutest thing ever ....

As we were walking, Victor stopped us to show us his paintings (which we don't fully believe were all his), but he seemed sweet, he was local and his english was great!  So, we asked if he would meet us at the square the next day to give us a little tour of his beautiful city!  He agreed!
We carried on ... exploring all the little courtyards and sweet spaces that hid behind huge doors!

Suddenly the sky opened and the rain came down during a parade we were watching ....  and out came a rainbow!!
But suddenly as we were leaning against a building for some cover, all the other people cozied up real tight against us so they didn't get rained on ... luckily we are both huge, so we could keep watching the parade lol
After a quick grocery shop of meats, cheese and crackers and some fruit and drinks ... we taxi'd home for a quiet evening!  She is just the best company ... we laughed alot .... and had a great sleep
